Hands-on skill sprint

Learn fibreglass repair with proof, not guesswork.

Fibreglass repair is a perfect SkillCoach skill because the manager can review visible proof: prep shape, grind zone, laminate coverage, cure quality, fairing, finish, and final inspection. This plan works for marine, RV, powersports, and automotive composite repair teams.

Five-day fibreglass repair sprint

Each day gives the learner one focused rep and one proof artifact the lead tech can review.

Day 1

Safety, materials, and damage read

Review PPE, dust control, resin system, mat/cloth choice, damage boundaries, and repair risk.

  • Proof: marked damage photo and written repair plan.
Day 2

Prep and grind standard

Practice bevel/taper prep, contamination removal, edge shape, and surface cleanliness.

  • Proof: before/after grind photos and prep checklist.
Day 3

Laminate layout and wet-out

Cut reinforcement, mix resin correctly, stage layers, wet out fully, and avoid trapped air.

  • Proof: layer plan and wet-out inspection notes.
Day 4

Cure, fair, and sand

Check cure, knock down high spots, fair the repair, and sand without overcutting the surrounding surface.

  • Proof: cured repair review and fairing photo.
Day 5

Finish and final inspection

Inspect shape, pinholes, adhesion risk, finish readiness, and what would fail QC.

  • Proof: final inspection checklist and readiness decision.
Manager review

Pass, coach, or repeat

The lead decides whether the learner is ready for supervised repairs, needs more prep reps, or should repeat laminate practice.

  • Proof: manager signoff with next-step decision.

What the learner must prove

SkillCoach should never call someone ready just because they watched the process.

Technical proof

  1. Correct PPE and dust control.
  2. Clean damage assessment and repair boundary.
  3. Proper taper/grind profile.
  4. Correct reinforcement plan and resin handling.
  5. No obvious air pockets, dry spots, contamination, or under-prepped edges.

Shop proof

  1. Can explain the repair plan to a service advisor or customer.
  2. Can list what would make the repair fail.
  3. Can document photos and notes for the job file.
  4. Can identify when to ask for senior review.
  5. Can clean up safely and protect the workspace.
Best fit

Use this for marine and composite-heavy shops first.

This skill is especially useful for boat repair, gelcoat/composite repair, RV panels, powersports plastics/composites, and custom automotive body or aero work.
